Hey guys, can you give us a brief introduction of yourself?
We are the Funk Cartel a brother duo based in East London. As well as produce and spin tunes we run a record label with our friends called ‘THUNDR’
How did you get into music production? And who inspired you?
We both been producing since we were around 15 it started out making beats on our laptops. House music was a big thing in our family growing up so it felt natural to start wanting to make our own tracks.
Back then we’d have Defected, Pure Pacha and Space CD’s on play all the time in the house this was our first taste for it.
What advice would you give to upcoming producers who are just starting out?
First off get to know your way around some software like Ableton. Then spend time in the studio with people whose music you like, you will learn fastest from them.
Get the best studio space you can and use sonar works to help you mix your music well.
Can you walk us through your workflow in the studio? How do you start a new song and how long does it take to finish it?
It really depends for us sometimes we’ll both start a track in the studio other times one of us will produce by themselves, regardless we always finish and mix them down together.
We usually produce most of the track in one session then tweak it over a week or so.
What is your favorite music production gear (vst or analog)?
We’ve just got a TR-8 in the studio so have been enjoying getting new grooves going on that.
With VST’s we have a few go to’s Ableton operator is always a good place to start, for baselines we’ll also go towards Vacuum Pro, Sub Boom or Trillian.
You guys own a record label called THUNDR, what advice would you give to producers who would like to get signed by you?
So there’s a team of 5 of us that run THUNDR together, we are happy as it's set to be a great year for the label with some really nice music on the way.
Honestly all that matters for us is that we love the music we sign, we want tracks that stand out.
How is the beginning of the year looking for you, upcoming shows and new releases?
We are both on a great vibe the start of this year and have had a big month in the studio so lots of new music is getting finished up.
Upcoming shows we are playing in Maidstone, London, Manchester and Bournemouth over the next few weeks and release wise our next out is ‘Hydra Effect’ a track on the THUNDR Winter VA coming Feb 24th.
